By Pierre de Mûelenaere

In 1890, Joseph Conrad served as a captain on the Congo River, an experience which later influenced the writing of Heart of Darkness. The novella retells the story of Marlow, as an ivory transporter who works on behalf of a Belgian company. During his journey, Marlow hears about Kurtz, a powerful ivory supply agent. Deep in the jungle, Marlow discovers with horror and fascination that Kurtz has set himself up as an evil ruling over native tribes.

Inspired by both Joseph Conrad’s novel and photographs mostly from the archives of the Royal Museum for Central Africa (AfricaMuseum), Thunder and Lightning is the first book of woodcuts by Pierre de Mûelenaere. He is also a literature publisher (Onlit Editions) and a musician in the duos Maze & Lindholm and Orphan Swords.
